As Michigan legalizes surrogacy, here’s how families found ways around the ban

Until new state legislation decriminalized compensated surrogacy this month, Michigan was the only U.S. state with a sweeping criminal ban on surrogacy. Families worked around the ban by seeking surrogates in other states, legally adopting their children, and pursuing informal surrogacy arrangements.
